Enjoy our heritage and continuing links! Canterbury was linked geographically to Gondwana. While searching for 'Terra Australis' Captain James Cook named Banks Peninsula. During the past century these links have been strengthened as some of the world's greatest explorers, scientists and artists have left from Canterbury, by ship or by air, to learn more about themselves and the remarkable lands to the south. The people of Canterbury share the courage of men and women such as Scott, Shackleton, Byrd and Hillary, supporting and participating in their achievements, and developing new products and services to support modern endeavours.
