Canterbury's geographic links with Antarctica stretch back to the break up of Gondwana. During the past century these links have been strengthened as some of the world's greatest explorers, scientists and artists have left from Canterbury, by ship or by air, to learn more about themselves and the remarkable land to the south. The people of Canterbury have shared the courage of these men and women, supporting and participating in their achievements. Many local families have direct links with The Ice through memorabilia or current supply and service contracts. However, many people have little idea where it is, let alone our contribution to its history and continuing science programmes. They are unaware of the beauties of New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands, a World Heritage site. Our visitors see only the tip of our relationship iceberg, few explore our local links with the south. Antarctic Link Canterbury was officially formed on 4 September 2000 at an inaugural meeting of founder members from Christchurch City Council, Antarctica New Zealand, Gateway Antarctica, International Antarctic Centre, Christchurch and Canterbury Marketing. Other founder members who supported the initial launch include Canterbury Museum, Banks Peninsula District Council and Antarctic Heritage Trust. The concept was raised at a meeting held at Christchurch City Council on 28 June 2000. The name was confirmed at a second group meeting on 21 November 2000. By strengthening links between Antarctic related organisations in Canterbury, bringing together the minds and energies of the people who know most about them at all levels, we will increase the success of each organisation, engender excitement and love for Antarctica in a wider community through an understanding of our links, attract visitors and strengthen the regional economy.
